Welcome To Montserrat

Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory and the official language is English with a strong presence of
Irish who came from St. Kitts to escape anti-Catholic hostility and in 1493 Columbus landed in Montserrat.
Montserrat has a live volcano called Soufriere Hills which started which started to erupt after lying dormant
for many years and in 1995 the volcano erupted and displaced about two thirds of the population away from
the danger zone. Plymouth which was the capital city is now under ash and the city was abandoned in 1997
to this day the south end of the island is unsafe for the islanders and visitors.
Shopping tends to be mostly run by local entrepreneurs and the sopping is not centralized but is scattered
throughout the island, many of the shops used to be in the capital city of Plymouth which is no more because
of the volcano. There are many fine handicrafts available on the island, such as gifts, shoes, electronics and
hardware and much more.
There are about 16 restaurants on the island and about 25 takeout and snack bars and 3 night clubs on the
island. Montserrat is laid back when it come to night life but they make up for it with their festivals and parades.
As I have stated before just about dining because of the great climate most of the dining is outdoors.
Enjoy Montserrat,
Richard
