Curacao has been a Dutch Colony since 1815 and was discovered by the Spanish in 1499. Willemstad is the
capital of Curacao and has a diverse population with about 135,000 people living in Willemstad and about 55
nationalities. There are 750 historic buildings in Willemstad and everything possible is being done to preserve
these historic buildings.
The pastel homes and places of business came about from a decree in 1817 by than governer Albert Kikkert
who did not like the glare of the white buildings because the glare gave him a headache and that is how the
came to be.
Willemstad has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage City and is among just a few places that have
this title in the Caribbean.
Try the local food such as stewed goat, plantains, lobster, conch meat and also go to The Floating Market in
Willemstad and try some of the tropical fruits and spices and for fish try dorado fillets and king fish.
There are 17 beaches on Curacao, plenty to choose from and enjoy your holiday on the white sands of Curacao.
